Load Binary Images to Power BI from SQL Server

Load Binary Images to Power BI from SQL Server
Dec 03, 2019

If you need to retrieve images from a binary field from SQL Server to load into Power BI there are a couple of steps you must complete before you can include the images in your report. Though the binary field is visible in query editor it can't be viewed or used in the data or report views.

The solution is to convert the binary field to Base64 image format stored in a varchar field as shown below:

'data:image/png;base64,' + CAST(N'' AS XML ).value('xs:base64Binary(xs:hexBinary(sql:column("ThumbNailPhoto")))', 'NVARCHAR(MAX)')

Then once the column is added format the column as "Image URL"
